EV Charging
The charts below explore the disparity in EV adoption rates across the United States. While we’ve made progress in growing EV adoption over the last several years, the bulk of this progress has come in a relatively small number of leading states. Some Republican politicians have worked against the growth of the electric vehicle industry, and lower adoption rates in their states have resulted. The missed economic opportunity in Republican states is compounded by the fact that they tend to have higher average vehicle miles traveled (VMT), which means that constituents in these states are missing out on fuel savings that would be significant.
The objective of transportation electrification is to reduce carbon emissions. We risk overstating where we are with this reduction when we track the national percentage of vehicles that are electric, rather than the actual percentage of VMT that are powered by electricity. Using color scales on these charts, we can more clearly see the role that politics is playing in EV adoption, as well as the resulting impact of our electrifying primarily the vehicles that are being driven the least.
